Pember is operated by Hanabi Studio LLC ("Pember," "we," "us"). This policy explains what we collect when you use the Pember app and pember.tv (the "Service"), why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.

In short:

  • We collect what we need to run your account, play your shows and handle your purchases.
  • We record how you use Pember, such as what you open and watch, so we can improve it.
  • We measure our advertising so we know which ads bring people to Pember.
  • We do not sell your personal information for money.
  • We do not show third-party ads inside Pember.
  • You can opt out of ad measurement at any time.

1. Information we collect

Information you give us

  • Account details: your email address and password, or the name and email that Apple or Google share when you use Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google. If you choose "Hide My Email" with Apple, we receive only an Apple relay address.
  • Profile: your display name, username, bio and profile photo, if you add them. If you sign in with Google, we may use your Google profile photo until you change it.
  • Content you post: comments, and likes on comments.
  • Messages to us: whatever you include when you email us for support.
  • Waitlist sign-ups: the email address you enter on pember.tv to hear about Pember's launch and new stories.

Information created when you use the Service

  • Activity in Pember:
    • the screens, series and episodes you open
    • when you start an episode, how far you watch, and whether you finish it
    • the answers you pick in interactive episodes, which we use to play the story and to understand how Pember is used, and never share with advertising partners
    • series you like or save to your library
    • offers and paywalls you see, and the steps you take toward a purchase
    • playback errors
    • your progress, wait-for-free timers and daily check-ins
  • Purchases and balance: subscriptions, episode unlocks, your crystal balance and how you spend crystals.
  • Device and app information:
    • device model, operating system, app version, language and time zone
    • IP address
    • an identifier we create for your app installation
    • Apple's identifier for apps from the same developer (IDFV)
    • only if you allow it through Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt, your device's advertising identifier (IDFA)
  • Approximate location: your country and region, inferred from your IP address. We do not collect precise location.

Information from advertising and attribution partners

When you install Pember after seeing one of our ads, our attribution partner, Singular, and the ad platform tell us which campaign and ad led to the install. This is how we measure which ads work. Apple may also tell us which Apple Search Ads campaign led to a download.

Payment information. We never receive or store your full card number.

  • In the iOS app, Apple processes all payments. Apple tells us what you bought, not how you paid.

What we do not collect. We do not access your contacts, camera, microphone or precise location. We do not use third-party analytics or advertising SDKs other than Singular.

2. How we use information

We use your information to:

  • Provide the Service:
    • create and secure your account
    • stream episodes and remember your progress
    • show your library
    • process purchases, subscriptions, crystals and unlocks, and restore them on your devices
    • display your profile and comments to other users
  • Understand and improve Pember:
    • analyze how people find, watch and finish series
    • find and fix problems
    • test new features
    • decide what content to make and feature
  • Personalize: remember where you left off, and recommend series based on what you have watched and liked.
  • Measure and improve our marketing:
    • learn which ads and campaigns lead people to install, sign up, watch and subscribe
    • send those results to the ad platforms we use, so they can measure and optimize our ads
  • Communicate with you: send service messages, such as account and purchase notices, and, if you joined our waitlist, launch updates and story news. Every update email has an unsubscribe link.
  • Keep Pember safe and meet the law: prevent fraud and abuse, enforce our Terms, and meet legal obligations.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it to show you third-party ads inside Pember.

3. How information is shared

We do not sell your personal information for money. We share information only as described below.

Service providers process information on our behalf, and only to provide their services to us:

  • Supabase: account, database, authentication and our usage records
  • Vercel: hosting for the app
  • Netlify: hosting for pember.tv and our waitlist sign-up form
  • Cloudflare: media storage and delivery
  • RevenueCat: in-app purchase and subscription management
  • Apple: Sign in with Apple, App Store payments and Apple Search Ads attribution
  • Google: Google sign-in

Attribution and advertising partners. Our partners are:

  • Singular, our attribution provider
  • Meta (Facebook and Instagram)
  • TikTok
  • Google (including YouTube)
  • Apple Search Ads

What we share, and when:

  • What: device identifiers (IDFV, plus IDFA if you allow tracking), IP address, your Pember user ID, and app events such as install, sign-up, episode completion, trial start and purchase.
  • Why: so the platforms can attribute installs and purchases to their ads, report results to us, and optimize who sees our ads.
  • Their use: the ad platforms may combine this information with information they already hold about you, under their own privacy policies.
  • On iOS: we share your device's advertising identifier and user-level data for tracking only if you allow tracking in Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt. If you don't allow it, the platforms receive only aggregated, privacy-preserving results through Apple's SKAdNetwork.
  • Under US state law: some state laws, including California's, call this "sharing" for cross-context behavioral advertising, or treat it as a "sale". You can opt out at any time (see Section 6).

Publicly within the Service. Other users can see your display name, username, profile photo, bio and comments.

Legal and safety. We share information to comply with law or valid legal process, or to protect the rights, safety and property of our users, the public or Pember.

Business transfers. If Pember is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, information may transfer as part of it, and this policy will continue to apply to it.

4. Cookies, SDKs and similar technologies

  • In the app: we use device storage to keep you signed in, remember settings and record usage. We use Singular's SDK for ad measurement, as described above.
  • On pember.tv: we use only essential cookies, which keep you signed in, remember settings and secure your session. We do not use advertising pixels, analytics or cross-site tracking cookies on pember.tv. We honor Global Privacy Control browser signals as an opt-out of sharing.
  • Video players on pember.tv: trailers play in an embedded Vimeo player with Vimeo's Do Not Track setting on, or in YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode. The player's provider receives your IP address and browser information when it loads, under its own privacy policy.

If we add advertising technologies to pember.tv, we will update this policy first. Where the law requires, we will also ask for your consent before using them.

5. Data retention

  • Account information: kept while your account is active.
  • Usage records: kept in a form linked to your account for up to 13 months. After that, we delete them or de-identify them by removing your account and device identifiers. We may keep de-identified and aggregated records to understand long-term trends.
  • Attribution data: Singular keeps it under its retention policy.
  • After account deletion:
    • we delete or de-identify your personal information, including your usage records, within 30 days
    • we ask Singular to delete the attribution data linked to you

Exceptions:

  • We may keep limited records where the law requires it, such as transaction records for tax and accounting, or where we need them to prevent fraud or resolve disputes.
  • Backups are overwritten on a rolling schedule.
  • Information that advertising platforms already received is governed by their policies.

6. Your choices and rights

  • Tracking on iOS: you can allow or deny tracking when Pember asks. You can change your choice later in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
  • Opt out of ad measurement, sale and sharing: in the app, turn off Settings → Personalized ads & ad measurement, or email privacy@pember.tv with the subject "Do Not Sell or Share". After you opt out, we stop sharing your user-level information with advertising platforms for these purposes. We also treat a Global Privacy Control signal from your browser as an opt-out.
  • Edit your profile: change your name, username, bio or photo at any time in the app.
  • Delete your account: go to Settings → Delete Account in the app, or email us. Deleting your account does not cancel an App Store subscription. Cancel it in your Apple ID subscription settings to stop future charges.
  • Access, correct, export or delete: email privacy@pember.tv.
    • Depending on where you live, including California and other US states, the EEA and the UK, you may have the right to know what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, receive a copy, or object to or restrict some processing.
    • You may also have the right to opt out of targeted advertising, sale or sharing.
    • You may use an authorized agent.
    • We will verify your request and respond within the time the law requires.
    • We will not treat you differently for exercising these rights.
    • If we deny your request, you may appeal by replying to our decision.
    • You may also complain to your local data protection authority.
  • Legal bases (EEA/UK):
    • Contract: running the Service and your purchases.
    • Legitimate interests: security, fraud prevention, and our own usage analysis to improve the Service.
    • Consent: ad measurement that relies on tracking, given through Apple's tracking prompt. You can withdraw it at any time in iOS Settings or in Pember's settings.
    • Legal obligation: where the law requires processing.

7. Security

We protect your information with encryption in transit, access controls and database-level permissions. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

8. International transfers

We are based in the United States, and our providers may process information in the US and other countries. Where the law requires, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as Standard Contractual Clauses, for these transfers.

9. Children

Pember is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 where local law sets a higher age). We do not knowingly collect their personal information, and we do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of consumers under 16. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the effective date above. If the changes are material, we will tell you in the app or by email before they take effect.
